André De Poorter: zijn kennis over en liefde voor de Belgische circusgeschiedenis is moeilijk te overschatten. Vandaag schrijft hij over une grande dame uit het circus, de in september overleden Gaby De Jonghe.
Circusartieste Gaby De Jonghe stamde uit de illustere Belgische circusfamilie De Jonghe van wie de naam, bij de oudere generatie, nog steeds tot de verbeelding spreekt. Het begon met grootvader Alphonse die in 1885 met een kermistheater ging reizen. Zijn zaak groeide en bloeide en kende veel bijval met de voorstellingen van het Passiespel en de lotgevallen van Jeanne d’Arc. Vaststellende dat de circusbranche in opmars was, schakelde hij in 1899 over naar deze ontspanningsvorm. Met succes, want in 1913 bestond zijn volledige gezelschap uit 130 personen en stonden er 45 paarden in de stallen. Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog wist enige zoon Joseph, samen met zijn vrouw Anna Van der Biest, het Circus De Jonghe weer gloriejaren te bezorgen en niemand zal ontkennen dat deze familie gedurende vele jaren het Belgische circusleven heeft gedomineerd.
Vijf kinderen, één dochter
Het gezin van Joseph en Anna kreeg vijf kinderen. Gaby was de jongste en ook hun enige dochter. Ze werd geboren toen het gezelschap in augustus 1927 in Aarlen stond. Ze was amper tien dagen oud als ze met de familie al meereisde naar Parijs. Toen ze drie jaar was voerde ze al een dansje uit in de piste en enkele jaren later wist ze een vrijheidsdressuur met pony’s voor te stellen. Toen ze zeven jaar was debuteerde ze als hogeschoolrijdster in haar geboortestad Aarlen.
Met het ouderlijke circus beleefde ze heerlijke momenten in vele Belgische steden, in Noord-Frankrijk (Duinkerke, Roubaix), maar vooral in het Brusselse Koninklijk Circus tijdens de winters 1933-34 en 1934-35. Dierendressuren waren haar ding. Ze heeft zelfs ooit met olifanten gewerkt.
Toen de oorlog uitbrak lag de zaak een tijd stil. Die periode werd door Gaby en haar oudere broer Octave benut om een acrobatisch rolschaatsnummer aan te leren. Ze genoten er veel bijval mee in de jaren 1942-48. Intussen bleef ze ook haar vrijheidsdressuren presenteren, soms samen met broer Alphonse. Toen vader Joseph in 1948 kwam te overlijden, baatte zijn weduwe samen met de vijf kinderen de onderneming verder uit. In die jaren hadden ze de befaamde Russische ruitertroep Les Sobolewsky in dienst. Zo leerde Gaby haar toekomstige man kennen. In het voorjaar 1950 huwde ze met Boris Sobolewsky (1909-1993) die stamde uit een grote Wit-Russische circusfamilie, bekend om hun voltigewerk. Gaby ging Boris’ ruitertroep vervoegen en ze leerde ook een pas-de-deux nummer aan samen met haar man. Het gezelschap was in de jaren 1952-53 geëngageerd bij het Circus Carl Hagenbeck.
Honden bij de vleet
Vanaf 1954 kende Gaby internationale bijval met haar ‘Gabriëlla’s Dogs Show’. Uit de lange reeks optredens vermelden we: Tom Arnod Harringway Arena in Londen (1954); Circus Schumann in Kopenhagen (1955); Circus Carré in Amsterdam, Astoria in Bremen en Circus Strassburger-Belli (1956); Circus Napoleon in Rancy (winter 1956-57); Circus Amar (1957); Moulin Rouge in Parijs (winter 1957-58); Circus Napoleon in Rancy (1958); Koninklijk Circus in Brussel (winters 1961-62 en 1968-69); Circus Benneweis in Denemarken (1964); Lorry in Kopenhagen en Circus Napoleon in Rancy (1965); Circus Krone in München en Astoria in Bremen (1966); Hippodrome in Great Yarmouth (1967); Blackpool Tower Circus en La Voix du Nord in Rijsel (1968); Circus Sabine in Rancy (1969) en Circus Barum-Safari (1970 en 1971).
Tussendoor beleefde ze met haar man ook de laatste jaren mee van Circus De Jonghe. Vergeten we ook niet dat ze met haar gemengde hondenrevue een tiental keer te gast was in het befaamde Hansa Theater te Hamburg. Een betere referentie kan men zich niet inbeelden. In 1972 verscheen ze voor het laatst voor het publiek in het Brussels Koninklijk Circus. Nadien baatte Gaby een tijdlang een hondentoilettage uit in Weerde. De laatste jaren van haar leven kon ze rekenen op de goede zorgen van haar dochter Natascha die de familie in ere houdt met een klein privé circusmuseum. Gaby overleed op 7 september 2012.
