In de vorige editie van CircusMagazine gaf cultuurjournalist Liv Laveyne vijf kritische aanbevelingen voor het circusatelier van de toekomst. Professionalisering en schaalvergroting, versterking van de lokale inbedding, openstaan voor talentwerking en het serieus nemen van circus als kunstvorm vormden hierin de krachtlijnen. Vier rechtstreekse betrokkenen kropen in hun pen en bezorgden ons hun lezersbrief. Waarvoor dank.

Twee van mijn zonen zitten nu vijf jaar in circusatelier Locorotondo en ik zie daar elke week (meermaals) de passie van de lesgevers-oprichters die inderdaad ‘verknocht’ zijn aan hun atelier. Gelukkig! Niets is zo aanstekelijk als het enthousiasme van iemand die leeft voor zijn project, en daarvoor met plezier ook de piste veegt. En omdat de lesgevers alle leerlingen van in het begin kennen, kunnen ze helemaal op maat werken. Geweldig voor mijn zonen die elk gebaat zijn met een heel andere aanpak. In de voorbije vijf jaar is het leerlingenaantal erg toegenomen en ook het aantal lessen, maar gelukkig blijft het nog kleinschalig.
Kleinschalig is niet synoniem voor amateuristisch. Ik heb er geen zicht op hoeveel de lesgevers uitwisselen of bijscholen, maar pedagogische expertise is er in overvloed. Kleinschalig betekent ook niet ‘op eigen houtje’. Geregeld kunnen onze kinderen deelnemen aan allerlei conventies, meerdere leerlingen volgen ondertussen opleidingen in andere ateliers of zijn aan de slag als lesgever en geregeld worden er gastdocenten uitgenodigd. Maar gelukkig moet ik niet half Vlaanderen doorkruisen om mijn zoon te laten deelnemen aan een productiegroep.
Dat schaalvergroting nodig is om de kwaliteit te verhogen, betwijfel ik ten zeerste. De voorbije jaren is zowat de hele maatschappij ‘verschaalgroot’: banken, bedrijven, scholen, sociale voorzieningen, … maar zijn we daar dan zoveel beter van geworden? Identiteit, verbondenheid, bezieling, wordt dat ook geteld? Dat schaalvergroting financiële voordelen heeft, zal ongetwijfeld kloppen. Maar als dat nodig is om te overleven, laat ons dan maar springkastelen verhuren!
Circusateliers moeten professionaliseren, moeten samenwerken, moeten zich profileren, moeten concurreren. Dat is mij wat te veel moeten. Het is net omdat er niet zoveel moet maar heel veel kan en mag, dat mijn zonen op circus zitten. Ik huiver bij de gedachte aan een A-ploeg en een B-ploeg. Mijn oudste zoon volgt ondertussen meerdere lessen en zit ook in een productiegroep, mijn tweede vindt het oké om te circussen voor de ontspanning. Dat kan zonder ook maar de minste zweem van onderscheid in ‘keurploeg’ en ‘afvallers’. Dit gaan we toch niet zomaar weggooien!
Ik hoop dat ons circusatelier in de toekomst nog even hartelijk, warm en huiselijk zal zijn. In de plaats van al dat optellen (meer kinderen, meer lesgevers, meer subsidies, grotere organisatie), geloof ik meer in vermenigvuldigen en delen. Wat er nu overal te lande aan prachtigs gebeurt, laat ons dat vooral blijven doen. Is er meer goesting? Laat dan nieuwe gepassioneerde mensen hun eigen project opstarten. En laat ons vooral ook wat zo goed is, delen: in scholen, in wijken, in de bijzondere jeugdzorg, met alle kinderen en jongeren die er zoveel deugd aan kunnen beleven als mijn kinderen.

Het artikel over het circusatelier van de toekomst is boeiend en lanceert wat interessante stellingen, maar het mankeert wat mij betreft een beetje aan visie en realiteitszin. Sommige aanbevelingen zijn bruikbaar voor sommige ateliers, maar het lijkt me een slecht idee om een toekomstvisie op te bouwen vanuit deze vijf kritische aanbevelingen. Drie bedenkingen.
Ten eerste denk ik dat het niet goed is om te vertrekken vanuit gebreken die je zelf hebt en kwaliteiten die andere ateliers wel hebben om een langetermijnbeleid van je circusatelier op te zetten. De talentontwikkeling van Ell Circo d’ell Fuego kan niet zomaar gecopy-paste worden want ze hangt samen met wie de Fuego’s zijn en wat ze uitstralen. Een buurtproject van Circusplaneet vertrekt vanuit passie en ervaring. Met een tent de buurt intrekken om met de ‘moeilijke kindjes’ te werken, zonder die passie en ervaring, zou wel eens heel slecht kunnen aflopen. Een langetermijnplan moet vooral focussen op eigen sterktes. Wat goed gaat, moet je nog groter maken. Wat niet goed gaat, daar stop je misschien beter mee. Doe ook zo veel mogelijk wat je zelf plezant vindt en niet wat anderen vinden dat jij zou moeten doen. En als dat nu toevallig springkastelen bouwen is, waarom niet? Wat is het verschil eigenlijk tussen een springkasteel en een airtrack of een bascule?
Ten tweede: koken kost geld. Ik lees vandaag in de krant dat het inschrijvingsgeld voor muziekacademies zou opgetrokken worden van 60 euro naar 120 euro. Op die manier zou 12% van de totale kost om een jaar muziekles te volgen door inschrijvingsgeld gedragen worden. Als we snel rekenen: een academie met 500 leerlingen krijgt een structurele subsidie van ongeveer 400.000 euro op jaarbasis. Een circusatelier met evenveel leerlingen heeft een subsidie van in het beste geval 65.000 euro. Sommige kleinere ateliers worden zelfs nauwelijks gesubsidieerd. Als we willen professionaliseren, communicatieverantwoordelijken aanwerven, echt goede producties maken, stoppen met springkastelen verhuren, … dan denk ik dat er ergens toch meer structurele financiële ondersteuning zal moeten komen.
Het artikel mankeert tot slot ook een ruimer perspectief. Het Westerse samenlevingsmodel botst op grenzen: de aardoliereserves slinken, het financieel-economisch systeem is in crisis, de aarde warmt op, er is veel jeugdwerkloosheid, … Alternatieve ideeën rond duurzame ontwikkeling beginnen meer en meer ingang te vinden in alle lagen van de samenleving. Als circusateliers kunnen we denk ik een belangrijke rol spelen in deze transitie: we bieden kinderen en jongeren een perspectief dat niet vanuit kennis vertrekt zoals het klassieke schoolsysteem, maar wel vanuit samenwerking en creativiteit. Onze verenigingen zijn plekken waar mensen samenwerken en dingen doen voor en met elkaar. De kunstvorm circus is daarbij een enorm krachtig wapen. Onze Angelsaksische collega’s noemen zichzelf heel dikwijls ‘Community Circus’, een term die deze visie goed vat. Een circusatelier van de toekomst is er volgens mij één dat op zijn eigen manier invulling geeft aan deze rol. Als je van daaruit vertrekt om een toekomstbeleid te plannen, dan komt de rest eigenlijk vanzelf.

“Hadden we maar een glazen bol, wat zou het leven veel makkelijker zijn.” Woorden van grootmoeder zaliger die me de liefde voor het circus mee gaf. Maar soms is het wel goed om alles stap voor stap af te leggen en te leren van dingen die minder goed waren en de goede dingen verder uit te werken.
Toen ik meer dan drie jaar geleden met Circus Hawdoe begon, had ik ook niet kunnen denken dat het zo’n vaart zou lopen. We begonnen op één locatie, de turnzaal van Gitok, maar namen onmiddellijk alle workshops aan die we kregen aangeboden door jeugddiensten en organisaties allerhande. We hadden meteen een dertigtal kinderen. Net genoeg om het hoofd boven water te houden. We hadden niets te kort, maar ook nooit overschot. Ik ondervond al snel dat een circusatelier leiden naast een fulltime job een onbegonnen zaak was. Lesgeven en workshops verzorgen ging nog net, maar de broodnodige reclame maken – zoals Goedele dat zo mooi kan zeggen op tv – kwam er niet van.
Het gevolg was dat het atelier niet groeide. We bleven op circa 50 leden schommelen. Na een atelieroverleg kwam ik in contact met Leen Driesen van Kay Fou. Wat begon als een voorzichtig gesprek werd al snel een overeenkomst om samen te werken. We blijken namelijk een zelfde visie te hebben op atelierwerking: kinderen komen naar ons om plezier te beleven aan het circus, leren ze de beste trucs, des te beter, maar we leggen hen niets op. Bij ons kan alles – lees: veel – maar niets moet. Dat laten we over aan het dagelijks onderwijs en de ratrace van onze maatschappij.
Ondertussen is onze samenwerking een paar maanden oud en begint het stilaan vlot te lopen. Duidelijke afspraken zijn er gemaakt over wie wat doet binnen de organisatie. Onze organisatie, Circant vzw, wil een koepel aanbieden aan ateliers die nog wel willen verder werken, maar de administratie en bijkomstigheden die een atelierwerking met zich mee brengt, te veel vinden. Groot voordeel is dat nu alle administratie vanuit één zetel gebeurt. Er is iemand als aanspreekpunt voor die hele administratieve molen. Verder is een ander constant bezig met alle aanvragen voor workshops: contacten leggen, afspraken maken, contract opstellen, begeleiders zoeken, job opvolging, … Het grote voordeel is dat de lesgevers volledig kunnen focussen op het lesgeven en niet meer bezig zijn (of zo weinig mogelijk) met administratieve taken.
Een samenwerking van verschillende ateliers heeft uiteraard meer voordelen. Ik denk maar aan het aantal lesgevers. Als enige lesgever begonnen nam ik na een jaar een extra lesgever aan en een assistent. Door de samenwerking hebben we nu plots een pool van een tiental potentiële kandidaten.
Maar misschien nog wel het belangrijkste voordeel is het gevoel om er niet meer alleen voor te staan. Als klein atelier zie je even veel administratie voorbij komen als een grote werking, maar je moet het wel alleen zien op te lossen. Door de krachten te bundelen sta je er niet meer alleen voor, je kan op iemand terugvallen. Het schuift de problemen zeker niet weg, maar samen kan je wel meer aan en dat voelt echt goed aan!
Hebben we dan geen problemen? Oh jawel, als er bij ons een lesgever ziek valt moeten we ook puzzelen en oplossingen zoeken en schuiven met lesuren of zalen. Maar meer mensen bedenken meer oplossingen.
Hoe de toekomst er gaat uitzien, weten we dus niet, maar we zien het hoopvol tegemoet. We hebben het gevoel dat we er met frisse moed zijn ingevlogen en dat doet goed. We hebben ook sterk het gevoel dat onze manier van samenwerken de toekomst is. Een koepel per provincie die een aantal ateliers aanstuurt en begeleidt. Alle ateliers kunnen hun eigenheid behouden. Alle ateliers binnen de koepel behouden hun manier van werken en lesgeven en dat is maar goed ook, want we willen zeker geen eenheidsworst in het circus!
Els Degryse (coördinator Woesh, Brugge)
Helemaal mee eens dat ateliers zich moeten professionaliseren. Daar zijn we ook allen druk mee bezig. De juiste mensen op de juiste stoel van ‘den bureau’, docenten die zich steeds meer en beter bijscholen, docenten die steeds meer kiezen om van circusdocent hun beroep te maken, … Ook mee eens dat circus thuis kan horen onder de andere kunsten en dat Pipo de Clown iets helemaal anders is dan clownerie. Natuurlijk staan onze deuren wagenwijd open voor artiesten uit allerlei genres die met ons willen samenwerken. Ook fijn natuurlijk dat we een opstap zijn voor circustalenten.
Maar wat betekent dit alles praktisch en concreet? Eén grote pool van docenten om over alle Vlaamse ateliers in te zetten? Eén pool van circusworkshoppers voor Vlaanderen? A-werking en B-werking voor talenten versus hobbyisten? Alleen nog circusproducties met de grote C? Alle goede bedoelingen ten spijt, maar daar geloof ik niet in.
Uit ervaring kan ik met zekerheid zeggen dat de tijd, energie en kilometers nodig om circusles te geven op grotere afstand van het atelier op lange termijn zwaar op de werking weegt. En dit niet alleen financieel, want je hebt wel die enthousiastelingen (fysiek en mentaal) dichtbij nodig om je werking uit te bouwen. En als ze zich niet verbonden voelen met het atelier dan werkt dit niet. Bovendien mogen we dan wel evolueren naar een professioneel bedrijf qua inhoud en organisatie, qua verloning zijn we nog ver van huis en hebben we al die vrijwillige energie bijzonder hard nodig. Een atelier groeit dankzij de persoonlijkheid van zijn docenten. Docenten die zich dus verbonden voelen met waar ze werken. Tijd en energie steken om leden te werven, contact met ouders onderhouden, contact met lokale scholen, sociale en culturele organisaties, … Ja, inderdaad, partners zoeken buiten de muren van de circusschool. Dit doe je niet van op een afstand. Dit doe je niet van achter een bureau. Dit doe je niet in theorie, maar midden in het werkveld.
Een pool vol kennis en kunde voor workshops klinkt mooi en handig in theorie. Maar in de praktijk denk ik aan kilometervergoedingen die torenhoog oplopen, uren extra verplaatsing voor docenten die door iemand betaald moeten worden. Materiaal dat van waar moet komen? En voor wie zijn dan de opbrengsten? Een atelier leeft van subsidies en lidgelden… euh, nog niet voor de helft. Het merendeel van ons budget halen we uit workshops, animaties, optredens, … Als die allemaal in één pot gaan, waarvan moeten we dan (over)leven?
Het circusatelier van de toekomst klinkt heel mooi in de theorie, maar in de praktijk struikel ik meteen over obstakels die ik niet in 1,2,3 uit de weg kan ruimen. Bovendien snap ik nu niet goed of we nu moeten centraliseren of net decentraliseren, want elke wijk heeft nood aan een circusatelier in de buurt, met docenten van ver weg??
Het atelier van de toekomst, dat zijn voldoende en gemotiveerde stafleden en docenten om samen een lokale werking uit te bouwen (en ondertussen de middelen binnen te halen om al die mensen deftig te vergoeden), om af en toe circus met de grote C te maken, om dat ene A-talentje tussen de 20 B’ers te blijven boeien, om die 20 B’ers ook de kans te geven een productie te maken, om speciale doelgroepen te bereiken, om de lokale politici te overtuigen van onze meerwaarde voor de stad, … Het atelier van de toekomst, dat is er eentje met een sterke, lokale basis.
