Sommige koppels ruziën luidkeels roepend, andere gooien met het servies, maar we houden ons hart vast hoe het er thuis aan toe gaat bij Bert & Fred. Op elkaar mikken met dartspijlen, messen werpen, hamerslingeren? Wie hun performance ‘I start to like you’ ziet, vreest het ergste.
Wanneer ik Frederique Snoeks (26) en Bert Loenders (23) interview, zijn ze de laatste zaken aan het pakken om daags erop naar Amerika af te reizen waar ze zullen optreden tijdens een groot evenement in pretparkenparadijs Orlando in Florida.
Vorig jaar nog maar afgestudeerd aan ACaPA, de circushogeschool in Tilburg, hebben ze al heel wat op hun palmares. Ze wonnen de prijs voor ‘la prise du risque’ op Pistes de Lancement, de Silver Star op het Young Stage Festival in Zwitserland, schitterden in de ‘Cirque Composé’ avonden, traden afgelopen zomer tijdens de openingsfestiviteiten van de Olympische Spelen in Londen op aan de zijde van Pink Floyd, en onlangs raakte bekend dat ze ook geselecteerd zijn voor Cirque de Demain, het prestigieuze Parijse festival waarop het nieuwste, meest beloftevolle circustalent aan bod komt. “Tien jaar geleden had ik dit nooit durven dromen,” zegt Frederique.
Net als haar partner Bert heeft ze er nochtans al een lang traject opzitten waarbij circus toch wel altijd om het hoekje loerde. Zij won op haar zestiende als de jongste kandidate ooit, de prijs voor beste straattheateract op Theater aan Zee in Oostende. Ze trok er de mannelijke omstaanders een rokje aan, liep over vuur met een jeugdige branie en lef die meteen bekoorden. “Ik heb altijd graag opgetreden, als kind deed ik aan turnen en op mijn tiende ben ik begonnen in het circusatelier in Dommelhof.” Daar liep ze ook Bert tegen het lijf, al was hij toen nog een jonkie waar ze weinig oog voor had. Hun wegen kruisten later bij diverse workshops en in ACaPA waar ze behoorden tot de allereerste lichting circusstudenten.
Allebei hadden ze al eerder toelatingsproeven gedaan aan de Brusselse circushogeschool ESAC, maar zonder succes. Niet geheel verwonderlijk vindt Frederique: “Het niveau is er erg hoog. Je moet er concurreren met buitenlandse studenten die er vaak al een jarenlange professionele training op hebben zitten. Zeven jaar geleden waren de mogelijkheden in Vlaanderen qua opleiding vrij beperkt. Maar via allerlei workshops onder meer bij Espace Catastrophe in Brussel en Ell Circo d’ell Fuego in Antwerpen, ben ik mij voort gaan ontwikkelen, om uiteindelijk in ACaPA in Tilburg te belanden.” En daar hebben Bert & Fred geen spijt van. “ACaPA was toen pas opgericht. Het eerste jaar was het, zoals dat voor elke nieuwe opleiding geldt, nog wat zoeken: materiaal, geschikte ruimtes, docenten. Maar daar tegenover stond dat ACaPA – in vergelijking met de andere circushogescholen die doorheen de jaren een eigen stijl ontwikkelden – nog een onbeschreven blad was. De school moest samen met de studenten dat blad beschrijven wat betekende dat we ook veel onze eigen mening en input mochten geven,” aldus Bert. “ACaPA is een school die in vergelijking met andere een grote artistieke vrijheid geeft aan de studenten. Het gaat om meer dan technische kunstjes alleen. Naast je eigen specialiteit circustechniek en lessen acrobatie en trampoline, ligt er ook een sterke focus op dans en theater,” vertelt Frederique. Dat het een aanpak is die vruchten afwerpt, bewijst de selectie van Cirque de Demain 2013 waar, net als vorig jaar, twee van de geselecteerde acts uit de ACaPA-stal komen.
Zwevend op de trapeze, voeten op de grond
Hoewel ze pas vorig jaar afstudeerden, spelen Bert en Frederique al vier jaar lang op diverse festivals en speciale events. “In de maanden dat we geen les hadden, traden we op: een spaarpotje om materiaal aan te kopen, maar ook en vooral een kans om zoveel mogelijk ervaring op te doen en contacten te leggen,” verklaart Frederique. ”De meeste circusstudenten moeten nog van nul beginnen als ze afstuderen, wij wilden meteen startensklaar zijn.” Die start hebben Bert & Fred niet gemist.
In Orlando gaan ze optreden tijdens de IAAPA-conferentie (de grootste handelsorganisatie in de amusementsindustrie die het welzijn behartigt van tal van pretparken en consorten over gans de wereld, red.). Gala’s, evenementen, congressen voor ziekenhuizen … Bert & Fred halen hun neus niet op voor dergelijke optredens. “Je krijgt een totaal ander publiek dan je gewoon bent en voor veel mensen is het vaak een allereerste contact met hedendaags circus. En ondertussen blijven we verder werken en schaven aan onze act. Een avondvullende voorstelling zal er ooit wel komen, maar op dit moment zien we waar het lot en de aanbiedingen ons brengen.”
Performancekunst
Bert & Fred, de artiestennaam van Bert Loenders en Frederique Snoeks, doet eerder denken aan een oud clownsduo, maar dat is een dwaalspoor voor de verfrissende mix van circus en performance art die ze met ‘I start to like you’ brengen. In hun entr’acts, korte tussenstukken tussen de acts van de andere artiesten, is Frederique als een domina in een foute SM-relatie wanneer ze Bert telkens weer het podium oproept en hem aanmaant om het gevaarte van een slingerende hamer, een klappende zweep, een brandende hoepel te ondergaan. Aan het slot brengen ze een act op Washington Trapeze (zwevende trapeze) die – al is het alleen al door de hoogte – ontzag wekt. Op hun hoofd balancerend op de trapeze laten ze zich omhoog takelen. Finale is een ‘spelletje darts’: zij, hoog in de nok, mikt met dartspijlen op de schijf op zijn hoofd. Het publiek wordt mee betrokken in hun spel: tot groot jolijt van de achterste rijen, tot angst van wie op de eerste rijen zit.
“Circus, dat gaat om het reële fysieke hier en nu. Het is iets heel echt, je moet dat niet willen verbloemen door een dansje te doen of een verhaaltje te vertellen,” vindt Frederique. De hele wereld is hun inspiratiebron. “Tentoonstellingen, foto’s of zo’n intro van een tv-serie als ‘Dexter’ dat geeft me meteen allerlei nieuwe ideeën. We willen straffe beelden brengen. Geen illusie, maar de waarheid van techniek en objecten.” En dat kan best gevaarlijk zijn. “Er kan altijd iets fout lopen, maar het is een berekend risico dat we nemen. We testen alles vooraf uit en meten precies waar zo’n mes terecht zal komen. Al is het al eens gebeurd dat iemand van de lokale technische ploeg per ongeluk nadien een mes had verhangen. Da’s dan even schrikken natuurlijk, maar uitgezonderd de dartspijl die ooit in Berts voet is beland, is de schade tot nog toe gelukkig beperkt gebleven. Het komt er vooral op aan vertrouwen in elkaar te hebben.”
Let’s stick together
Bert & Fred, ze zijn niet alleen een duo op het podium maar ook in het dagelijks leven. “Het is fijn dat we ervaringen zoals deze reis nu, de verhalen on the road kunnen delen. Want anders kan toeren een hele eenzame ‘job’ worden. Maar ook op creatief vlak vind ik het een voordeel om met je partner te kunnen werken: er zijn minder barrières, je moet niet zo omzichtig je mening uitdrukken. Al is dat ook niet altijd even gemakkelijk: het kan er in volle creatiestress af en toe goed dik tegen zitten. Ik krijg vaak de reactie van mensen nadat ze ons op het podium hebben bezig gezien: ‘Amai, gij moet ook nogal op uw tellen passen met zo’n vrouw’. Maar ik kan iedereen gerust stellen: buiten de scène is ze een pak aangenamer en ben ik absoluut geen voetveeg,” lacht Bert.
