Hoewel elk wetenschappelijk onderzoek of relevante statistiek over dit onderwerp ontbreekt durf ik te stellen dat het circusvolkje over het algemeen bestaat uit een hoop intelligente, sympathieke en bewuste wereldburgers die de samenleving met een open blik tegemoet treden, een enkele uitzondering niet te na gesproken.
Het lijkt me dan ook vanzelfsprekend dat de moderne circusartiest af en toe wakker ligt van de milieuproblematiek en de alomtegenwoordige klimaatopwarming. Dat laatste lijkt echter moeilijk te rijmen met sommige aspecten van het circusleven.
Aftandse circuscamionettes doorkruisen Europa in een blauwige dieselwalm, volgeladen vrachtwagens verslepen decors, circustenten en caravans en er wordt al eens een vliegtuig opgesprongen naar de andere kant van de wereldbol om een act te brengen die hoop en al 7 minuten duurt. Kwestie van er zo inefficiënt mogelijk een paar hectoliters kerosine door te jagen. De ecologische voetafdruk van de circusartiest neemt heel toepasselijk het formaat aan van een buitenmaatse clownschoen.
Hoog tijd dus voor een eerste biologisch afbreekbare circusvoorstelling! Op wereldtournee met de bakfiets, in een circustent gemaakt uit aan-elkaar-genaaide tweedehands regenjassen! Het ganse publiek voorziet, op fietsen gezeten, in de elektriciteit voor de belichting! Jongleerkegels uit gevlochten riet, een loopbal uit gerecycleerde colaflessen en popcorn uit de eigen moestuin!
De wereld gered, uw circusgeweten gesust en het goede voorbeeld gegeven. De toekomstige generaties circusartiesten zullen ons dankbaar zijn!
