Julie Descamps, actief binnen het Circuscentrum als programmator en productiemedewerker, zag de nieuwe voorstelling van Théâtre d’un Jour en was zwaar onder de indruk. CircusMagazine vroeg haar om – voor het eerst in haar leven – een recensie te schrijven. Het mooie resultaat lees je hier.
Theater, dans, circus, muziek, opera, tekst, objectmanipulatie, marionetten, … Alsof je in een frituur staat met grote honger en niet kan kiezen tussen welke saus je op je frieten wenst om nog maar te zwijgen van welk vleesje je daarbij wil eten… en dan maar een frikadel, saté en een kaaskroket bestelt. En doe er ook nog maar een portie bitterballen bij, om het af te leren. Je zou het niet verwachten, maar alles smaakt even lekker. Maar daar waar je na deze maaltijd het gevoel hebt van: ‘Dju, ik heb weer te veel gekozen, mijn ogen waren weer groter dan mijn buik’, zo uitgebalanceerd, evenwichtig en onverzadigbaar was ‘Alaska’.
Alaska
Op de uitgestrekte, witte scène speelt zich het verhaal af van Sébastien, een jongen die zijn geheugen verliest na een auto-ongeluk met zijn moeder toen ze op de terugweg waren van een muziekoptreden. Tot daar de enige houvast die je als kijker hebt. Verder vraagt regisseur Patrick Masset om je over te geven aan de verbeelding. Mee te stappen in zijn sprookje, zijn fantastische wereld waar walvissen fluorescerende wezens zijn en waar ijsberen acteurs worden (of is het nu andersom?).
Zoals de acteurs en zangeres zich laten manipuleren en bespelen door de circusartiesten, zo geef je je als kijker over aan dit ensemble. Ensemble, inderdaad! Een ensemble waar circusartiesten (La Ruspa Rocket), acteurs (Véronique Dumont en Sébastien Jacobs) en zangeres (Sandra Nazé) niet onderverdeeld worden in één vakje, geen stempel krijgen van zanger of acteur, maar waar zes kunstenaars – zeven eigenlijk, met Masset meegerekend – erin slagen om 101 kunsten tot één kunstvorm te gieten.
De witte scène wordt versterkt met robuuste beelden, ruwe materialen, uitgesproken vormen en kleuren en een dreigende ijzeren geraamte die boven de scène hangt. Het ijzeren geraamte dat een abstractie is van een walviskarkas, waar de artiesten met elkaar jonassen.
Kunsten heruitvinden
Bij ‘L’enfant qui…’ (de vorige productie van Théâtre d’un Jour) koos Masset voor natuurlijke materialen zoals aarde en hout, hier gooit hij het over een volledig andere boeg en kiest hij resoluut voor les arts plastiques. En dat maakt deze voorstelling en deze maker ook zo sterk. Jezelf en de kunsten heruitvinden.
Ik zou, zoals oorspronkelijk mijn opdracht was, nog een volledig A4’ke kunnen doorgaan. Maar ik ben geen recensent of heb toch niet die ambitie. Ik wil ‘Alaska’ dan ook niet plat analyseren. Niets tegen recensenten die bij de geschiedenis van de friet teruggaan naar de conquistadores en Carolus Clusius, maar een goeie friet is een goeie friet. Punt.
