Als feestelijke aftrap knalde om middernacht ‘1984’ van David Bowie uit de boxen. Als toenmalige schoolverlaters, die Big Brother enkel kenden van George Orwell’s boek, stonden wij klaar om een nieuw tijdperk in te luiden. Dit najaar, bijna 30 jaar later, kreeg ik de gelegenheid om verwonderd terug te blikken.
Op de vooravond van de verkiezingen (13 oktober) ga ik naar een herneming van ‘De macht der theaterlijke dwaasheden’ kijken, de creatie uit 1984 waarmee Jan Fabre zich afzette tegen het toenmalige theaterestablishment. Net zoals in het sprookje van ‘De kleren van de keizer’ laat hij gekroonde hoofden naakt de scepter zwaaien. Omgeven door lakeien en bejubeld door onderdanen laten zij hun ‘onzichtbare’ mantel bewonderen. Gedurende de voorstelling herhalen de spelers de namen van grote podiumvernieuwers zoals Wagner, Béjart en Peter Brook. Wanneer op het eind de naam van Jan Fabre toegevoegd wordt stelt de theatermaker zichzelf ten dienste van de kunst én schrijft zichzelf daarbij de theatergeschiedenis in.
De eerste keer dat ik het zag – 30 jaar geleden – werd ik overrompeld door de kracht waarmee de performers gedurende vier en een half uur in een totaalgebeuren over de rand van de fysieke en mentale uitputting gedreven werden. Vandaag hoeft het voor mij niet zo lang te duren en tussendoor stap ik even de zaal uit. Wanneer ik buiten een sigaretje sta te roken besef ik dat er tussen die eerste keer en nu veel gebeurd is op het podium, in de wereld én met mezelf.
Even flirt ik nog met het idee om de scène met de keizers door Danny Ronaldo en Juan Trukyman te updaten, maar ik keer terug naar mijn plaats, voor een scène die ik koester als mijn eerste lief: vier dansers worden achteraan het podium door ‘bewakers‘ tegengehouden. De dansers breken uit op Wim Mertens’ ‘Maximizing the audience’ om uiteindelijk in glitterpak vooraan te schitteren! Mijn huidig lief gaapt een beetje bij de symboliek en ik onderneem verder geen poging om het uit te leggen… Na al die jaren!? En staat het niet elke toeschouwer vrij om te behagen of niet?
Na de verkiezingsuitslagen van de volgende dag ruist er een periode van mediastilte totdat er vanuit het stadhuis plots gekrijs weerklinkt. De inmiddels beruchte katten-filmopname van Jan Fabre belandt via een smartphone op het internet en de kunstenaar ontpopt zich onbedoeld als probleem. Er volgt luid protest, Fabre excuseert zich uitvoerig en na duizenden haatmails krijgt l’enfant terrible letterlijk een pak rammel. Vervolgens opent de associatie met ‘allochtoon’ de weg naar mogelijke complottheorieën en ik bedenk als grap: “Toch al behoorlijk goed geïntegreerd als ze al op ons eigen cultureel erfgoed slaan.”
Als vegetariër acht ik me gelukkig in een samenleving met een spreekbuis voor het dierenwelzijn hoewel ik voor een dilemma sta. Ik strik me als old school journalist en stel en stoemelings de vraag: Wat doen wij wanneer we door het oog van een nieuwscamera naar ‘menselijk’ leed, veroorzaakt door agressieve handen of tongen, kijken? Met z’n allen overgaan tot happy-slapping?
Leven we in de Middeleeuwen waar de nar een bijzondere sociale positie genoot? Schijnbaar onderaan de sociale ladder mocht hij de leden van het hof voor de gek houden, zijn bijzondere status liet hem ongemoeid ingaan tegen de heersende opvattingen, zonder ervoor gestraft te worden.
In ‘De keizer van het verlies’ uit 1996 plaatst Fabre de clown als metafoor voor elke artiest. Wie anders dan de clown is beter geplaatst om aan het publiek de openheid van de mislukking in zichzelf te laten zien?
PS: Of de andere filmopnames, in aanwezigheid van een dierenarts – een uil, slangen en een zwerm bijen – in het stadhuis zijn doorgegaan, is mij niet duidelijk, maar misschien was het toch zo geen gek idee om een circusdirecteur tot burgemeester op het Schoon Verdiep aan te stellen?
